Role keyword guide
Data Analyst Resume Keywords
Data analyst resume keywords describe the tools you use, the analysis you perform, and the decisions your work supports. Start with the target job's SQL, spreadsheet, visualization, and data-quality requirements. Include each term only when you can explain a real project, your contribution, and the resulting report, insight, or decision.

Data analyst keywords grouped by evidence
Use this list to review a posting, then keep only terms relevant to that job and supported by your work. The checker above recognizes these phrases; it does not infer equivalent skills or verify your experience.
Querying and data preparation
SQL, Python, Excel, pandas, Power Query
Name the data source, transformation, or query you worked on. Specify a dialect or library only if you used it; Python experience does not automatically prove pandas experience.
BI and visualization
Tableau, Power BI, Looker, dashboards, data visualization
Connect the tool to the dashboard audience, metric definitions, and refresh process. Maintaining an existing dashboard is different from designing one.
Analysis and validation
data cleaning, data quality, statistical analysis, A/B testing, cohort analysis
Describe a validation rule, analysis question, or experiment you actually handled. Do not add A/B testing because a posting names it if your experience is only descriptive reporting.
Business communication
stakeholder reporting, KPI reporting, trend analysis, requirements gathering, documentation
State who used the output and what it helped them understand. If you cannot establish a business impact, describe the deliverable rather than inventing a percentage improvement.
From a job requirement to resume evidence
Illustrative examples below show supported terms, wording opportunities, and genuine gaps. They are not customer results.
| Job requirement | Resume evidence | Safe action |
|---|---|---|
| SQL and Tableau reporting | Built SQL queries and maintained a Tableau revenue dashboard. | Supported: keep both tools beside the reporting work. |
| Stakeholder reporting | Presented weekly sales metrics to the operations team. | Wording opportunity: identify the audience and reporting cadence. |
| A/B testing | No experiment design or test analysis in the resume. | Unsupported gap: do not relabel ordinary reporting as experimentation. |
| Python data cleaning | Used Excel to clean exports; no Python project provided. | Partial domain overlap, different tool: retain Excel and flag Python as a gap. |
A truthful keyword rewrite
- Before
- Responsible for dashboards and reports.
- After, if supported
- Built SQL queries and Tableau dashboards for weekly revenue reporting, documenting metric definitions for the operations team.
The second version names the tools, reporting purpose, and audience. It is appropriate only if all three are true. Add a time saving or revenue result only when you have a defensible measurement; the example intentionally has no invented metric.
Choose keywords for the kind of analyst role
Read the responsibilities before choosing a skills list. A reporting analyst may need SQL, Excel, and a BI tool; a product analyst may need experiment or cohort analysis; a data-quality role may emphasize validation and documentation. These are editorial examples, not a ranking of employer demand. The actual posting determines which branch matters.
Where to place data analytics resume keywords
Use a concise skills section for tools you can use independently, a summary for your relevant specialization, and experience bullets for proof. A tool appearing once in a relevant bullet can communicate more than repeated mentions without context. Preserve the employer's wording when it is accurate, including product names such as Power BI, but do not hide a keyword block or list every analytics platform.
Entry-level evidence can come from projects
A coursework or personal project can support SQL, data cleaning, and visualization when you identify it as a project. Name the dataset, task, checks, and output. Do not imply that a classroom project was paid employment or a production system. If the posting requires years of professional experience, a project demonstrates a skill without satisfying that separate requirement.
Data analyst vs business analyst keywords
Data analyst language often focuses on querying, validation, reporting, and interpreting data. Business analyst language often focuses on eliciting requirements, mapping processes, and validating a change with stakeholders. Some roles overlap. Use the duties in the posting to choose your emphasis rather than replacing every term simply because the title includes analyst.

Data analyst resume keyword questions
What are good data analyst resume keywords?
Use the specific tools and tasks in your target posting, such as SQL, Excel, Tableau, Power BI, data cleaning, data quality, and stakeholder reporting, when your experience supports them. There is no universal list that every data analyst should copy.
Should I include Python if the job says it is preferred?
Include Python if you have genuine experience and can describe the work. A preferred requirement can be relevant without being mandatory; it is still not permission to claim a skill you have not used.
Can a project support ATS keywords for a data analyst?
Yes, a clearly labeled project can demonstrate tools and analysis methods. It does not automatically count as professional experience or guarantee screening results.
